Mike Bloomberg Hangs with 'Gossip Girl' Cast →
The mayor, the jokester that he is, couldn’t resist opining on some of the plot’s developments (a light moment in what became a rather serious press conference later): “I just don’t see how Blaire could marry Prince Lewis when she’s clearly in love with Chuck,” he said. “I just wish that Nate and Vanessa had been able to work things out…But again...

APE IN A CAPE: "Make Your Own, Then" →
gailsimone: Been thinking about this a lot lately, pardon me if it’s a bit scattered, I have to jot this down between deadlines and may mess it up a little. I have seen, a million times, people with complaints about art or comics or film or music, dismissed online with the simple comment, “Make your own,…

The Most Badass Excerpt From Barney Frank's...
Interviewer: You’ve long argued for the decriminalization of marijuana. Do you smoke weed?
Barney Frank: No.
Interviewer: Why not?
Barney Frank: Why do you ask a question, then act surprised when I give an answer? Do you think I lie to people?
Interviewer: I thought you might explain why you support decriminalizing it but don’t smoke it.
Barney Frank: Do you think I’ve ever had an abortion?

lizlet: Because I am a lady, I travel about town with a purse filled with stuff — gadgets, cords, toiletries, pens. For its relatively compact size, it’s pretty heavy, and when I walk with it it’s exposed to the elements. Thus this morning, rainy as it was, I decided to test my purse’s necessity for daily… I carried a small, canvas backpack in Mexico last week. The only contents were...

Tested on Human →
Hi all 26 friends who follow me on the Tumblr, A month or so ago, I began a process to switch from synthetic chemical-based personal care products & cosmetics to as natural a regimen as I can muster without sacrificing prettiness.  A week ago, I quietly started to blog my findings. I would appreciate it if you would take a look and pass along to any friends you think might be interested.

With This Torch, I Thee Weld →
In which The New York Times speaks about the rings my friend Andrew and his fiance made: Some people bring their own metal. Christopher Michaud, 34, a product strategist at Huge, a digital agency in Brooklyn, and his fiancé sawed in half a South African Krugerrand, a gold coin and a family heirloom, as the raw material. The rings, made with Mr. Abbay for roughly $2,000, cost less than the thick...

Much Tumbling About of Brains: Who's really... →
jaybushman: In a much-linked-to article this week, Roger Ebert sets out several reasons why box office figures are down this year — most of which can be summed up by saying that the moviegoing experience has deteriorated. I can’t disagree with that. At the same time, he heaps part of the blame on young… Jay Bushman is conveniently omitting the part of the story about how he is a...

Leaving Animals Out of the Cosmetics Picture -... →
I’m in the midst of a slow process to replace my skincare and makeup routines with natural, low (ideally zero) toxicity products.  The cruelty-free byproduct of this move is pleasant.  I don’t like being around animals, but I don’t want to harm them either. On March 11, 2009, the European Union banned cosmetics and personal-products companies from testing their products on...

I don’t drink coffee very often, but when I do I drink soy lattes.  I’ve been using a Starbucks card to rack up the points for free soy.  Today I used the first free drink coupon that I earned to get my usual drink, a tall soy latte.  It was pointed out to me that it’s free so I should size up.   Sure enough, I just threw away the last inch or so of my tall latte.
